PORTOFINO
The beating heart of Portofino, the famous Piazzetta is the gathering place of high society and the “Dolce Vita,” beloved by Ligurians and international VIPs. After enjoying local specialties in its historic establishments, you can climb to the Church of San Giorgio, which houses the relics of the patron saint of Portofino, brought by sailors returning from the Crusades. The church, of Lombard origin, was rebuilt after the bombings of World War II and offers a breathtaking view of the Gulf. From the Piazzetta, you can also admire Castello Brown, once a Genoese defensive fortress and now an exclusive event venue.
Monterosso
It is the largest and least steep of the Cinque Terre villages, with a historic center dotted with narrow alleyways, typical places and Ligurian scents. Here Eugenio Montale spent his childhood and youth, as evoked in his poem “Meritare pallido e assorto.” In Monterosso, immortalized in the Disney film “Luca,” is the picturesque Fegina beach, the only sandy beach in the Cinque Terre. Walking through the village, one can admire the Church of San Giovanni Battista, the Oratory of Santa Croce, and the Church of San Francesco, which houses a work by Van Dyck. In May, the Lemon Festival paints the
village streets yellow.
Vernazza
Listed by the New York Times among the 46 places in the world to visit, for many it represents the most picturesque village. Noble and elegant in appearance, perched on a rocky spur, the village was built in the year 1000 by the Genoese as a defensive stronghold. Evidence of this includes the typical tower-houses, the Torrione, and the Castello Doria with the Torre Belforte. Not to be missed are also the Church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia and the Sanctuary of the
Black Madonna.
Corniglia
The only one of the Cinque Terre not directly accessible from the sea, which is why it is considered the most authentic and least affected by mass tourism. To access it from the beach, one must climb the Lardarina staircase with its 377 steps, at the end of which one can admire a breathtaking panorama of the crystal-clear sea. In addition to the landscape, splendid is Guvano beach; in Corniglia stands the Church of San Pietro, an architectural jewel in gray stone and Carrara marble. Also worth visiting is the Oratory of the Disciplinati of Santa Caterina and its terrace overlooking the Cinque Terre Park.
Manarola
The Sentiero Azzurro transforms into the Via dell’Amore passing through Manarola, recently closed due to a landslide; the first 200 meters are currently accessible. Worth a visit are the bell tower and the Gothic church of San Lorenzo. Evocative and romantic is also the final stretch of Via Belvedere, a “balcony” overlooking the sea that leads to a small panoramic square.
Riomaggiore
Built vertically and nestled between two steep terraced hills, Riomaggiore is famous for its enchanting panoramas. The eastern gateway to the Cinque Terre, it is connected to Manarola by the Via dell’Amore. In the 19th century, the Florentine painter Telemaco Signorini was fascinated by it. In the upper part of the village, one can visit the Church of San Giovanni Battista, built in 1340 on a basilica plan, with pillars of different styles and its two Gothic doors. Also worth a visit are the Oratory of Santa Maria Assunta from the 1500s, the Oratory of Sant’Antonio Abate, and the Oratory of San Rocco. Not to be missed is also the Castle of Riomaggiore from 1260.
